Bare Behind Bars at the BBFC

Postby Mercury » 04 Oct 2010, 14:49

Yes arrow are due to release this title sometime in the future (according to Cult Labs). Previously banned but this being an Arrow release you never know it might just scrape through.

This is one title I haven't seen by the way. Vince, Mark, what are its chances? Obviously it wouldn't be banned today but would it pass uncut.

I have but its a long time ago. As far as I can recall it is a largely softcore South american WIP flick with a downbeat ending. One hardcore fellatio scene included - it can be easily edited out at no loss to the narrative. I would have thought this could get by without two many cuts.

Thanks M3, minimal cuts then.

Yeah it was previously banned about the same time as Sadomania and of course this has since been passed with just 17s of cuts.

This is how the news was reported in issue 5 of Flesh and Blood at the time of the ban

I doubt you will be surpised to hear that Redemption failed in their attempts to have the ban on Bare Behind Bars lifted by the Video Appeals Committe. A total farce. The company were denied a fair hearing - their carefully prepared evidence was totally ignored and everything that the BBFC representatives said was accepted. Ban upheld. Do not question authority.

It was a pre cut version the BBFC in the end rejected.

I'm just hoping that Arrow don't pre cut the film in anyway ie the hardcore footage. It would probably be cut but I always prefer it if they could just submit the full version so we can see for sure what the BBFC's decision will be.

Cut by 1:35 to avoid an R18.

Company chose to make cuts to remove explicit sight of unsimulated sexual activity (in this case, sight of fellatio and vaginal penetration by penis and dildo) in order to achieve an '18' classification. Cuts made in accordance with BBFC Guidelines and policy. An uncut 'R18' classification was available. 'R18' works may only be supplied in licensed sex shops.

But surely the BBFC wouldn't give an uncut R18 to a film containing sexualised violence -- would they? Doesn't quite add up.

What a ridiculous thing for the BBFC to say, this is the 2nd time they have made such a clanger recently.

There's no way the uncut Bare Behind Bars would qualify for an uncut R18, for one all the sexualised violence would have to be cut, in fact all the violence would have to go. An R18 is only for sex works, any mixing of sex and violence is strictly prohibited.

Also the film is not even listed in the adult genre.

Apart from this it's interesting to see that apart from the hard core, the film has been been passed without a single cut. So this means the scene with the boy has got through.

Yes an odd decision.I thought they may have passed the brief fellatio in an '18'.Perhaps they're regretting passing Caligula intact now ?.

Yes completely bizarre. I can't believe they would seriously have awarded an uncut R18, and they must have known that there was no way Arrow would have agreed to such a rating in the first place.

I haven't seen Bare Behind Bars but is the sexualised violence (also the non sexualised violence) definitely of the 18 level?

Also I haven't seen an R18 ever, anyone who has have they ever seen any instances of such violence being allowed to pass?

Will email the BBFC about this as soon as I can, but they do take a long time to reply.

Yes likewise Porno Holocaust which I saw recently would be heavily cut to remove all the numerous hardcore scenes for the 18, although the scenes would be acceptable at R18, but the 2 hardcore rapes would not be acceptable at any rating, so they would have to go. By the way this film was even worse than Violent Shit.

The BBFC would have passed Bare Behind Bars uncut with an R18

It was judged under current classification standards that BARE BEHIND BARS no longer breached our policy tests for sexual violence. The film was recognised as being dated and risible. The scenes of sexual assault were no longer sufficiently credible to carry an erotic charge or present a significant harm risk to most adult viewers. Taking these elements into consideration, it was felt the scenes were not problematic at '18' or 'R18'.

Our 'R18' Guidelines governing the portrayal of any sexual activity which lacks consent stand. There has been no change to our classification criteria. 'Normal' violence (ie. "non sexual") is permitted in 'R18' works, as in works at other ratings as long as it accords with the category criteria.

As BARE BEHIND BARS was not classified 'R18', no Consumer Advice was produced for that version of the title. The CA for the '18' rated edit of BARE BEHIND BARS states it contains "strong sex and sexualised violence".

A somewhat surprising decision, but when I finally get around to actually seeing the film I''m sure it will become more clear to me.

Yes I'll have a look and see, shouldn't be too long. Sounds like it will be interesting from a censorship point of view anyway.

The BBFC make no mention of it containing sexual violence only sexualised violence, I know they're tougher on the former.

Anyway when I get around to seeing it I will give my views. It will no doubt be the biggest load of rubbish I've seen since Porno Holocaust but there you go.

Interesting the BBFC say that violence is allowed in R18s, I thought it wasn't. But as mentioned I've never seen an R18. I was just going by there CA for R18's which makes no mention of violence. Perhaps they should consider changing it.

Vincenzo wrote:The Devil In Miss Jones[/b] and Debbie Does Dallas. Hardcore pornography has no interest whatsoever for me (honest!) and the only reason I have the above is because they're regarded as classic films of their kind, along with the (so far non-UK) Behind The Green Door.

None of these have anything resembling sexualised violence in them.

Behind The Green Door is a pretentious load of old cobblers; interesting enough from a historical standpoint though. Arty porn is certainly a strange commodity. The only one I need to watch out of those is The Devil In Miss Jones, which is supposedly a classic. Any good?

I did get a few laughs out of Deep Throat I must say; Harry Reems is hilarious in it and the soundtrack is brilliantly bonkers.

Haven't seen them but they're supposed to be cult films, the first one mixing sci fi with porn.
